Yesterday, I revealed what must have been obvious to everyone except me: I’m an introvert masquerading as an extrovert.
Curious about whether you might be one too? Take Susan Cain’s Introvert Test, from her book (and Bella Vita Reading List selection) Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking below. Just answer each question ‘true’ or ‘false,’ choosing the answer that applies to you most often.
INTROVERT-EXTROVERT TEST
- ___ I prefer one-on-one conversations to group activities.
- ___ I often prefer to express myself in writing.
- ___ I enjoy solitude.
- ___ I seem to care less than my peers about wealth, fame and status.
- ___ I dislike small talk but I enjoy talking in depth about topics that matter to me.
- ___ People tell me that I’m a good listener.
- ___ I’m not a big risk-taker.
- ___ I enjoy work that allows me to ‘dive in’ with few interruptions.
- ___ I like to celebrate birthdays on a small scale, with only one or two close friends or family members.
- ___ People describe me as ‘soft-spoken’ or ‘mellow.’
- ___ I prefer not to show or discuss my work with others until it’s finished.
- ___ I dislike conflict.
- ___ I do my best work on my own.
- ___ I tend to think before I speak.
- ___ I feel drained after being out and about, even if I’ve enjoyed myself.
- ___ I often let calls go through to voice mail.
- ___ If I had to choose, I’d prefer a weekend with absolutely nothing to do to one with too many things scheduled.
- ___ I don’t enjoy multitasking.
- ___ I can concentrate easily.
- ___ In classroom situations, I prefer lectures to seminars.
The more often you answered ‘true,’ the more introverted you probably are. If you have roughly the same number of ‘true’ and ‘false’ answers, you may be an ambivert.
What are you? Introvert, Extrovert, or Ambivert?
